I’m Kristen Birley

Kristen has been teaching singing lessons to students of all ages for over ten years.  Her students have excelled in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and have studied for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations.

Kristen holds a Bachelor of Music degree (Vocal Performance, Music Education), a Bachelor of Education degree and a Master of Music (Vocal Performance) from the University of Victoria. Kristen has completed senior and advanced level examinations in voice and piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music, in modern and tap through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance , and in ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance . Kristen is a member of the British Columbia College of Teachers and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Kristen has performed in voice, dance and theatre for over 20 years. Her voice achievements include solo and choral work at the local, provincial, national and international levels. As a member of the University of Victoria Chamber Singers, PRIMA Choir, Vox Humana, and Vancouver Island Chamber Choir, Kristen has performed in variety of venues all around Canada, United States, Asia and Europe.

As a member of various production companies, including the Masques Theatre Company, St. Luke’s Players, the Victoria Operatic Society, and the Victoria Symphony. Kristen has gained extensive experience in theatre and solo performance.

In 2000, as the intermediate vocal winner at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, she received the Joyce McLaughlin Memorial Award. Again in 2000, as Victoria provincial representative, Kristen placed first in the province in the intermediate vocal category at the B.C. Festival of the Arts.

Kristen has directed summer musical theatre children’s camps, and has been assistant music director for Reynolds, Oak Bay Secondary Schools Theatre Productions and music and choreography director for Masques Theatre Company and St. Luke’s Player Productions. 

Currently, Kristen works as a music teacher and choir director at Selkirk Montessori School.  Previously, she worked as a music teacher at St Margaret’s School.
